PROFILE
Roger Liley is an English artist born in Stoke-on-Trent in 1951. He studied at Leek School of Art and Stoke-on-Trent School of Art in the UK emerging with 1st class honours.
His interest in contemporary portraits began in the 1970s inspired by the work of David Hockney first seen at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. Following a move to London and an established career in design Roger is now focussed entirely on painting and fine art.
Roger captures the positive inner spirit of his subjects, who include celebrities, politicians, family and friends.
He attended Chelsea College of Art, Open Studio, and more recently The Heatherley School of Fine Art, London.
Two latest works have been acquired by Soho House. Recent exhibitions include the Brick Lane Gallery London, Art San Diego, Miami Art Fair during Art Basel Week, Art Expo New York and Close Encounters New York March 2025.
Roger is represented by Agora Gallery, 530 West 25th Street, New York.

STUDIO PRACTICE
Roger works between London and his studio based in Lymington on the South Coast of England.
‘The studio is the fixed point to which I return to develop my work, but the ideas come from a truly international outlook. I don’t like to be in one place for too long’.
He is motivated by the vibrant culture of the London art scene in Soho and Fitzrovia. Frequent visits to New York and California are inspirational for building a confident use of colour and shape.
Mixed media works combine oil and acrylic with graphite for finer detail. Working quickly the fast drying time of acrylic combines perfectly with the rich colours of water mixable oil.
Roger traces his love of diversity and culture to his early life. Born in a small but beautiful village in the Staffordshire Moorlands district of England on the edge of Stoke on Trent, a large industrial centre with strong cultural links to the creative industries.
